$ ffmpeg -i file.avi -f file.mp3

Ubuntu 8.10 the -f should not be there.

Typo perhaps?

ffmpeg complains when that switch is there!

ffmpeg complains because after -f you have to specify the output format, as per the man page.

The correct invocation is:

ffmpeg -i file.avi -f mp3 file.mp3

Also use -acodec copy for better (original) quality
like this:
ffmpeg -i video.avi -acodec copy audio.mp3
